Humanity is losing the war. The once-mighty space navies have been crippled, officers and crew have been stretched to the limit and Earth herself has come under heavy attack. The end cannot be long delayed. For Admiral Smith and the crew of HMS Ark Royal, the stakes have never been so high.

The one hope is to make contact with alien factions that might oppose the war. But, as Ark Royal sets off on a desperate diplomatic mission, it rapidly becomes clear that there are both human and alien factions that wish to fight the war to the bitter end - and that her previous missions have sown the seeds of success ... or total failure.

The Trafalgar Gambit Ark Royal Book 3 eBook Christopher Nuttall Justin Adams

This is the third book in the trilogy. One thing I liked were several minor plot twists and how they were resolved. In this book, the "enemy" become more and more three dimensional. We realize that the cause of the war was more complex.
Another thing that made the book more interesting was the fact that Nuttall uses 21st century Earth superpowers and regional powers and projected them into the future in the 24th century: there is still America, United Kingdom still independent of Europe, the Russians, Chinese, Indians... Earth is not united like the Federation in Star Trek. Up to a certain point, all humans were fighting the enemy on a relatively united front, but in this book (spoiler!), the Russians do something which ends up killing one of the major characters. I'm okay with that, even though it was sad, but at least Nuttall is not George Martin who regularly kills off major characters.

It's a good trilogy and sets up for the spinoff - the Warspite series.

The Trafalgar Gambit Ark Royal Book 3 eBook Christopher Nuttall Justin Adams Reviews

Now I do know the trilogy has been extended to a nine-logy) you look it up) within the Ark Royal Universe, but I'm going to put some time between Ark Royal and the next six books. I highly recommend the first three.

That said, Chris me lad, (Forgive me for sounding like a troll.) but you have got to come up with replacement descriptions for "rolling the eyes" and "icy chills" or "cold sweat" running down there backs. First, rolling the eyes sounds like valley girls. And that was the image that came to mind. And most fighter pilots and all astronauts were body hugging underwear so moisture is absorbed and not a problem. Now Gen. Yeager might have experienced your cold sweats flying P-51's but not our trusty star fighter pilots. Ok. That's it. I'll never bring up again.

Look forward to your future books. Cheers!
Having read all three books in the trilogy, I gave this one four stars. Not as good as the first but better than the second one. Enjoyed getting to know the leadership characters and the growth in tactics by both sides as the books progressed.

Three shortfalls in this book would include the finality of the ending. I had conjured up where the book was going, and knowing there were more books in the series expected more continuation, going forward. Surprise, surprise.

Secondly, the blackmail plot was delivered at high speed, and stood out in its brevity, and lack of continuity.

The biggest mystery for me was the beautiful researcher. The author goes to great pains to introduce her, lots of description, and then she plays such a minor role. I just don't get it. Almost like he forgot about her.

Oh well, I am glad I read the trilogy and even with several wired aspects, I would recommend the book, and series, to all.
Ark Royal was a really good book and one of Christopher's best books yet.

It has it all to me. Flawed characters, a hopeless situation, the under dogs and great military action in a realistic manner. But it was really on a micro personal ship type story level.

Book 2, was a great good continuation and a worthy sequel. Did it beat book 1? Nope but it was still great read, continuing to expand the universe. Introduce the aliens as more then a mysteries enemy, as well as explore the universe and the hopeless cause that human was in.

Book 3, Trafalgar Gambit, I felt, was as good as book 2. It really expanded on the aliens as well as the human factions. It breathed depth into the the world that is Ark Royal and as such I really got to know the universe well. It also tied up alot of loose ends and expanded on the humanity and flaws of all sides on a species level and a personal level. Ending in a realistic and suitable manner for all involved.

I did feel that it could be better, and that is because I am comparing it to Ark Royal (book 1). Also felt the story was rushed (as it had alot of content to cover) and could be expanded (especially on the personal char level) and that is because the Ark Royal universe, Admiral Smith and the rest of the Ark Royal characters are/were such great characters that I wanted a greater more awesome send off.

Christopher is a really good writer that does the micro person level really well (Book 1). He also does the more larger picture type stories well too (Book 2). What he did for this book 3 was to combine and tell the micro personal level as well as the larger picture at the same time. In this aspect I feel he can do better. And when he perfects it... look out.

The Trafalgar Gambit is a good book and worthy ending for the Ark Royal saga. It could have been really great but that does not detract from all that it is. It is a showcase that Christopher is a really good author that we all should keep an eye on as when he perfects his craft, he really will be someone to look out for,

Luckily for us, the Ark Royal universe is not at the end. And I cannot wait for more books by Christopher. Keep it up Sir.

PSNote, I give 4 stars as I feel only the SUPER OMG EPIC books should be giving the top score of 5.
Somewhat bittersweet finale. Closing out a story like this isn't going to satisfy everyone. But the characters introduced in the first two books grow and develop further. A more complex series of themes tracking through space. Some points stood out . Some groups or nation states are willing to destroy everything if they can't have their way. This book especially makes that point . Those who choose to report on the doings of royalty, whether titled or not, really are not given a warm reception in this book. Those who hold to higher ideals are counted among the better regardless of the outcome. I look forward to seeing the next series. The author spins a good tale.
